I think it may have something to do with thier gut bacteria for digesting high ruffage stuff to switching to high intestity fish food made for fish in tanks. They do not always do well if you change abruptly. I for sure know if changing the diet of Tropheus from veggie or spirulina flake to NLS do it slowly and feed very meanly.

While not convinced it is the best food for all cichlids without full tials I think it is a good comprimise for us all. I tended to think NLS was a rubbish fad from the US untill I tried it. NLS for sure has a good list of (high priced) ingredients without fish meal.įor sure I dunno if fish meal should be in cichlid foods but it is for sure cheap and what has been used for years.
I dunno if the removal of it from high priced commertial foods is based on science and evidence though. It is an impossible demand given the variety of diets these cichlids are adapted to.Ĭlick to expand.I tend to agree anything with cheap fish meal in it is not the best fishfood though has been in most fish foods for years. It is up to you to control the mix both quantity or quality for the different eating habbits of your tang cichlids.ĭo not expect the companys to do this for you. OMG if I was given a choice of anything I wanted in unlimmetted suply with no self control as with all tang cichlids I would be 20 stone and die very early. Its not as if they need anything more of anything than a guppy.Ī carnivor like Neolamprologus tretocephalus will enjoy fresh fish or prawns far more than commertisal fish foods.Ī mainly heabivour like Tropheus will try and eat high nutrient foods in preference to the algae they should eat.Ī reasonable balance is to feed em all on something like NLS or any omnivour fish food but it is hardly what they like most or in some cases what they should have but prefer something ritcher. Just can not figure out why tang cichlid foods are so expensive in the shops.
Some are a little too ritch for fish from such nutrient poor environments and need feeding only as supliments. NLS being particularly stingy in this respect but yep I got some free stuff to try.īut any good big brand cichlid food has all the colour enhancers and all of the stuff any cichlid needs. I tend to use whatever companys give to cichlid events for free. Colour yep for some man made Malawi cichlids. What is wrong with Tetra cichlid and TetraMin? (Other than the high cost) Personally I have tried most commertial foods (inc NLS) and never spotted any difference in the tang cichlids or tang cichlids health.
